Your Brain is Bullying You: The Truth About Ruminating

In the context of complex PTSD, we often think of self-abuse as physical or overtly destructive. Yet, one of the most pervasive and damaging forms of self-abuse is chronic rumination.

When you live with cPTSD, your brain is wired to scan for threats. When there is no external threat, that hypervigilance turns inward or the brain creates stories about people in your life. And, if you're both intelligent AND creative, you're probably very skilled at ruminating. It may look like replaying past mistakes, conversations, and traumas on an endless loop, analyzing every detail in search of a safety that isn't there. Or it may look like projections onto others about why a person is behaving a particular way.

Ruminating isn’t problem-solving. It's a trauma response masquerading as productivity.

This cycle is fueled by the toxic tag-team of your inner and outer critics. The inner critic relentlessly shames you for your past actions, while the outer critic (anticipating judgment from others) obsessively reviews social interactions with the intention of preventing future rejection. By constantly revisiting the scene of the crime, you're effectively keeping your nervous system in a state of fight-or-flight and re-traumatizing yourself, moment by moment, reinforcing the belief that you're still unsafe, still guilty, still the victim, or still in need of fixing before you deserve peace.

Recognizing rumination as a form of self-abuse is the first step toward breaking the cycle. It requires radical self-compassion to say, "I am not broken, I am hurt." When you catch the loop starting, try to gently redirect your focus to the present moment. Your healing depends on learning to be a safe harbor for yourself.
